Understand the service

What does a topographic survey show?

A topographic survey measures the shape of the land and relevant physical features within a defined area. It gives designers and engineers an existing-condition base for planning, grading and construction decisions. Where requested, Grad Surveying also uses survey measurements for material-volume calculations. The required level of detail and output format are agreed around the way your consultant will use the data.

Is this right for you?

When might you need it?

Designing on an existing site

Provide the ground levels and features your designer or engineer needs.

Planning grading work

Establish an existing-condition base for the next design stage.

Measuring material volumes

Discuss the pile, survey extent and reference surface for a calculation.

Define the assignment

What can the scope include?

We confirm the survey information and deliverables your assignment needs. The following items guide that discussion.

Survey extent

Agree which accessible parts of the site will be measured.

Levels and features

Capture the relevant ground elevations and visible physical features.

Survey data

Present the measurements in the agreed plan or data format.

Volume calculations

Define the reference information and reporting when volume work is requested.

Your deliverables: The agreed survey plan or data, which may include spot elevations, contours, surface information or material-volume calculations. Proposed grading design and legal boundary work must be requested separately where needed.

From inquiry to handoff

Your survey, step by step

  1. Review the brief

Share the site address, survey extent and intended use.

  2. Agree the detail

Confirm the features, levels and formats your consultant needs.

  3. Capture the site

Complete the specified terrain and feature measurements.

  4. Prepare the information

Provide the agreed survey data for the design or planning team.

Frequently asked questions

Does topography confirm ownership boundaries?

Boundary work needs to be included separately when it is required.

Is a grading plan included?

A proposed grading plan is a different output. Explain whether you need existing measurements, grading work or both.

Can you calculate stockpile volumes?

Yes, material-volume work is within our topographic services. The measurement area and calculation basis need to be defined first.
